Rescue Me ID: 15-08-31-00648VanPelt (male)

Bichon Frise    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Remember Van Pelt? He came to us in October from the horrible puppy mill situation where dogs were left to die. He has been in a foster home and is still available for adoption. Van Pelt is a 7 year old Bichon who lived his life in a cage and was severely neglected. Foster updates are the best as you can get a true picture of what the dog is like in a home environment. A huge thank you to the foster home for doing so much for this guy. Van Pelt is available for visitors with an appointment so we can get him from the foster home to the shelter. Here is the update from his foster mom as well as a current picture: Van Pelt is doing well. He ... (Read More)is more comfortable around people but still skittish and doesn't like being touched (though he will put up with it). He is completely comfortable with everything else. He loves to run and has claimed his favorite places to sleep. He doesn't need to be kept in a kennel anymore at night and doesn't need to have a leash on all the time anymore, as he no longer hides and will let me catch him if I have to. He likes people, just not too close. He follows me everywhere and gets upset if I leave him. He likes the dogs even more. That is how I got him to trust me, as he will do anything they will. He will really needs a home with other dogs. He is not comfortable alone. Stan didn't blame the dog for biting him. Actually it made him feel even more sorry for Van Pelt. Van Pelt must have been in a very bad situation to lash out so aggressively. He latched on to Stan's hand and wouldn't let go. It was an unusual situation and I don't think it would happen again. It was when Van Pelt spent the nights in the kennel. When Stan got up, he would put the leash on and let Van Pelt out. That morning Van Pelt was in the corner and wouldn't come near him, so Stan basically had to crawl half way into the kennel (it's big, so he couldn't reach). He didn't realize that the dog would see that as aggression and get scared. Now it is a non-issue as Van Pelt prefers to be free with the other dogs (and me) and doesn't need to be in the kennel anymore. Other than that one time, he is completely submissive. Shortly after we got him, we took him to one of those self-bath places for dogs. He stood completely still and let us both touch him all over. I make sure to pet him every day and hold him it my lap, most days. He has a hard time making eye contact, but we have been working on it and he is doing much better. (Less)
